Ekiti Election: Fayemi bribed 16 LG NULGE chiefs with N8m to lobby workers against Oni, group alleges

A pro-Segun Oni group, the Ekiti Build Back Better (EBBB) has accused the Ekiti State governor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, of giving N8 million to the16 local government chairmen of the National Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE) in the state as bribe to lobby local government workers not to vote for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Asiwaju Segun Oni, in the June 18 governorship election.

According to the group, the 16 NULGE chairmen, who are to share the money at N500,000 per person, were told to tell the workers that if Oni became the governor, he would ask the workers to present their certificates as a prelude to retrenching them, adding that he would also be hostile to workers.

EBBB, in a press statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday by its spokesman, Idowu Adelusi, said Fayemi "who is owing the local government workers five months salaries" found it more important to conscript the NULGE chairmen "for the dirty job with a whopping sum of N8 million" instead of paying the workers' salaries.

Adelusi said the chairmen had been told to go back to their respective councils and tell the workers that Segun Oni was coming with "a policy of operation show your certificate," in order to retrench workers, among other obnoxious policies.

"Following the governor's order, the president of the union was seen going to the Local Government Service Commission to campaign to local government workers in all the local government areas and local council development areas.

"Notwithstanding diverting salary arrears and deductions of civil servants, teachers and local government workers to the campaign fund of Biodun Oyebaniji Campaign Organisation, the Fayemi-led administration has again diverted the money he had projected to pay part of the owed local government workers' salaries before the election to buy official cars for the new chairmen of the local government and local council development areas.

" This was contained in a circular dated May 23, 2022 released by the Ministry of Local Government Affairs and signed for the Permanent Secretary by Mr Abereola.  Part of the money was also to be used to pay severance allowance of former council chairmen and also shared to the governor's political associates," Adelusi said.

The EBBB spokesman stated further that "Fayemi decided to embark on this shameful blackmail, supposing   that Ekiti workers are morons and not wise enough to discern between good and bad governance.

"He promised to pay them some of their arrears before the election, but decided lately to suspend it till after the election.

"The Fayemi-led administration is disturbed by the rapid way its image is going down, a development that has forced the people not to want to have anything to do with the APC governorship candidate, Mr Biodun Oyebaniji, who they have seen as a Fayemi incarnate and continuity of Fayemi's repressive policies on the workers.

"How can a government elected by the people tell the workers that leave bonus is never  a right and payment of salary will always come after legal and illegal deductions have been done with peanuts left which are insufficient to pay the workers, but the same government would rush to blame insufficient allocation from Abuja and the dwindling economy?"

Adelusi said Ekiti people were now wiser and waiting to use their votes to remove the APC government "and install Segun Oni who they trust because he did it before and his former administration (2007 to 2010) has not been surpassed by the successive administrations."
