Interpol Traces €500,000 COVID-19 Fraud To Nigeria
~~‘Unmasked: International COVID-19 fraud exposed’.

The International Criminal Police Organisation, popularly called Interpol, has traced a €500,000 COVID-19 fraud to Nigeria.

The organisation made this known in a statement on its website titled, ‘Unmasked: International COVID-19 fraud exposed’.

According to the statement, the scheme was coordinated using compromised emails, advance-payment fraud, and money laundering.

It stated that the fraud was uncovered by financial institutions and authorities across Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands, as part of a case coordinated by INTERPOL.

The statement read in part, “In mid-March, as a number of countries were going into lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak, German health authorities contracted two sales companies in Zurich and Hamburg to procure EUR 15 million worth of face masks. With a global shortage on medical supplies complicating usual business channels, the buyers followed new leads in the hopes of securing the masks.

“It all started with an email address and website which appeared to be linked to a legitimate company in Spain selling face masks. Unbeknownst to the buyers, the site was a fake and their legitimate email addresses had been compromised.

“Through email correspondence, the company initially claimed to have 10 million masks, only for the delivery to fall through. As consolation, they then referred the buyers to a ‘trusted’ dealer in Ireland. The Irish middleman promised to put them in touch with a different supplier, this time in the Netherlands.

“Claiming to have a strong commercial relationship with the company, the man provided assurances that the alleged Dutch company would be able to supply the 10 million face masks. An agreement for an initial delivery of 1.5 million masks was made, in exchange for an up-front payment of EUR 1.5 million.

“The buyers initiated a bank transfer to Ireland and prepared for delivery, which involved 52 lorries and a police escort to transport the masks from a warehouse in the Netherlands to the final destination in Germany.

“Just before the delivery date, the buyers were informed that the funds had not been received and that an emergency transfer of EUR 880,000 straight to the Dutch supplier was required to secure the merchandise.

Insecurity: "Replace Us, We Are Tired Of Fighting Since 2016,” Soldiers Cry Out

There is uneasy calm in the camp of the soldiers fighting Boko Haram terrorists in Gamboru in Ngala Local Government, Borno State, as many of them are grumbling over the refusal of the military authority to rotate them, having stayed in the battlefield for close to five years.

The soldiers were moved to the 3 Battalion (Main), Gamboru-Ngala, from 4 Brigade Garrison, Benin City, Edo State and 81 Battalion, Mokola in Ibadan, Oyo State in February 2016.

The 3 Battalion (Main) in Gamboru/Ngala is under the command of Lt Col A.S. Olasheigbe. He is the third to command the troop.

Sources among the soldiers said the affected officers have complained several times to their Commanding Officers and other superior officers, but their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

They claimed that a signal from the Army Headquarters stipulated that all soldiers in the Northeast that have spent three years and above should be rotated.

Those who were sent to the Northeast in 2018 are about to be rotated and their signal is said to be out while those who have been there since 2016 are left unchanged.

The affected soldiers are now calling on the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai and Minister of Defence, Major-Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtd) to come to their aid.

“The main issue is that they are changing people that came after us from other units, but our own is different. Since we came here, Lt Col A.S. Olasheigbe is our third commander.

“We only have opportunity to see our family once in a year just for 16 days.

“All other corps (department) that we came together have been rotated, remaining 81 Battalion Infantry, 4 Brigade Garrison and main body of 3 Battalion,” one of the sources quoted a soldier to have said.

Ekiti Has Spent Over 3bn to Clear Land at No Cost for Investors

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Olabode Adetoyi, says the state government has spent over 3 billion naira to clear about 40,000 hectares of lands in the state for investors.

The commissioner said this while explaining what the Ekiti State Governor, John Kayode Fayemi, is doing to boost agriculture in the state.

Adetoyi stated this last Tuesday while speaking at a plenary session at the Feed Nigeria Summit (FNS) 2020 organised by AgroNigeria and held at the Ladi Kwali Conference, Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja.

The session, tagged the Resilience Enhancement Session, had the theme: COVID-19: Profiting from Production to Consumption and Everything In-Between.

Feed Nigeria Summit, hosted annually by AgroNigeria, is famed as Nigeria’s foremost agricultural sector convocation aimed at catalyzing transformational progress for the country’s agriculture.

This year’s edition of the Summit, themed: Agribusiness: Leading Nigeria’s Recovery, was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 1st and 2nd, 2020.

At the Summit, while pointing out the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic on agriculture and its attendant challenges, the commissioner said that the Ekiti State Government has been preparing ahead through its special agro-processing zones.

He noted that while the state government was focusing on the development of rice, cassava and other value chain crops in the northern part of the state, Central Ekiti was being prepared for tree crops

The Agric Commissioner also said that the state government was giving tax holidays of up to three years, depending on the investment, to investors in addition to Certificates of Occupancy.

He also noted that the state government was partnering with the African Development Bank to build up rural infrastructural development to facilitate these processing zones.

Olabode said, “COVID-19 was an eye-opener; it showed that in every producing state, we are not producing enough in Nigeria. It also showed us that we are not taking care of food processing and preservation.

“It also helped us realise that even in the field, we still need more assets to enhance our production. This pandemic has thrown a challenge to every state to tackle these issues. Every governor is now tightening their belts to develop their state’s agriculture.

“In Ekiti State, we saw it coming. Dr John Kayode Fayemi, who is agriculture friendly, has carved out special processing zones in Central Ekiti which is good for rice, cassava and other value chain crops. Ekiti has allocated over 40,000 hectares of land to investors with no cost for clearing. We have spent N3 billion doing this.”

The Ekiti State Commissioner also proposed the farm-to-fork model for the agricultural sector, which implies direct involvement in the various processes of the food value chain from agricultural production to consumption.

“Covid-19 has thrown a challenge to us, and it showed us that there is hunger in the land. The solution is the farm-to-form model through special processing zones,” he said.

Hike In Train-Fare, Only One Passenger Turned Up.

Only one passenger turned up and made the historic trip from Ibadan to Lagos yesterday as the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge train started operation.

The newly introduced service, according to the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), provides fully air-conditioned train services in the Economy, Business and First Class categories.

The corporation deployed only one Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) to kick-start the operation.

Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi had announced a price regime of N3,000 for the Economy, N5,000 for the Business and N6,000 for First Class.

Nigerians had appealed for a reduction of the fares, which many saw as unaffordable for the masses.

Our correspondent gathered that the inaugural train service, which originated from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, left around 8.20 a.m and arrived Lagos at 10.40 a.m with less than five passengers on board.

No passenger was picked at Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

“We had one passenger from Ibadan to Lagos, and this is not unusual. The service is just commencing. I’m sure as time goes on, the patronage will improve. Don’t forget again that we are approaching Christmas and New Year when patronage is expected to drastically improve,” a source on the inaugural trip told The Nation yesterday.

The Railway District Manager for Lagos, Jerry Oche said: “The Lagos Ibadan standard gauge train affords members of the public the opportunity to leave Ibadan for Lagos at 8 a.m and return at 4 p.m the same day.”

The district manager confirmed that the journey time from Lagos to Ibadan is two and a half hours.

This, he said, “makes more sense, going by recent reports of traffic gridlock that has characterised Lagos-Ibadan road, due to ongoing road construction along that axis”.

Oche urged Nigerians to embrace the new service, which he described as a new dawn in railway modernisation.

The district manager added that all major rules and regulations guiding train operations, like the use of nose masks and hand-washing in compliance with COVID-19 protocols, must be observed.

The train left Lagos at 4.10 p.m for Ibadan with five passengers.  The NRC said it would run one schedule of commercial service until patronage picks up.

Ondo Election Tribunal Strikes Out Two Petitions, As Thugs Invade Court Proceedings

Ondo Election Tribunal Strikes Out Two Petitions, As Thugs Invade Court Proceedings

The Ondo State Governorship election petition tribunal has heled its inaugural sitting to hear petitions against the victory of the incumbent Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu in the October the 10th Governorship elections in the state.

The tribunal dismissed two out of the three petitions filed by three political parties and their candidates to contest the result of the Election.

The political parties affected by the tribunal’s decision are All People’s Party (APP) and Action Alliance (AA).

Their petitions were dismissed for non filling of the pre-trial forms.

The tribunal subsequently awarded N100,00 cost against the petitioners in favor of each set of respondents .

With this, the only petition that is being entertained by the tribunal is the one filed by the PDP candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN against the victory of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN.

However the Major leading political parties in the state, the APC and the PDP have commenced war of words over the invasion of the tribunal during the inaugural sitting of the tribunal in Akure the ondo state capital.

It was widely rumoured that the APC led political thugs to unleash mayhem at the tribunal by the PDP but the APC in a swift reaction debunked the rumour.

At the tribunal sitting, several people were brutalised, while lawyers and litigants scampered for safety.

Here is the excerpt of the statement credited to the PDP:

Akeredolu Mobilizes Thugs To Tribunal Sitting In Akure
The Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN has allegedly mobilised large number of thugs to the venue of Ondo Gubernatorial Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
This is contained in a statement issued by the media team of the PDP in the PDP state.

At the hearing this morning, Tuesday, 8th December, 2020, APC thugs under the leadership of one “Chemical” bombarded the venue, harassing, molesting, beating up, shooting sporadically into the air and attacking anyone perceived to be supporter of the PDP and its Candidate, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, SAN. Mr. Sunday Oladunmoye is still receiving treatments from machete cut wounds he sustained from this group of thugs.

They were parading the vicinity of the Court in a tinted Toyota Corolla car. Others were members of the Taxi Unit of National Union of Road Transport Workers( NURTW) with instructions from their master Jacob Adebo (Idajo) to cause pandemonium during the sitting.

As early as 8.30a.m this morning, the Petitioners, Eyitayo Jegede and the PDP represented by its State Chairman, Alhaji Fatai Adams, led other PDP leaders to the Court.

But shortly thereafter, the APC thugs caused so much panic and confusion within the arena. It took the combined efforts of the Army and Policemen to restore order.

The PDP wishes to call on security agencies to live up to this fresh threat to law and order in the State. Resorting to violence will not deter the PDP and its candidate from pursuing this Petition to its conclusive end. Neither can this act of barbarism scare the Judges from the course of Justice.

Present at today’s inaugural hearing were; Engr Clement Faboyede, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, Tokunbo Modupe, Adomola Babalola, Hon.Suffy Uguoji, Engr. Adebowale, Hon. Akinsoyinu and Tokunbo Jegede. State Executive Committee Members, Tola Alabere, Oluseye Olujimi amongst others.

The ruling APC denied the allegation and accused the PDP of insincerity.

The Ondo APC spokesman, Alex Kalejaye said know nothing about the incident.

The APC in Ondo State parades unequalled disposition to peaceful conducts and approaches to issues, and therefore would not promote nor condone thuggery for whatever gains.
Like other stakeholders in the election petition tribunal, APC stalwarts, in their most decent and dignified manners came to the court, to listen to the proceedings.
They learnt, with dismay avoidable rowdiness among people that were struggling to enter the court premises. To the best of our knowledge, the desperation gave room for clash.
We are of the strong opinion that political parties and other stakeholders should caution their sympathisers against unruly display throughout the legal process, rather than holding APC responsible for such indecent and aggressive attitude.
We wish to affirm our confidence in the tribunal to dispense justice, and would therefore have no reason to encourage violent disposition, under whatever guise. Our candidate is unperturbed about the process.
At the end of the legal exercise, the tribunal decision would be informed by facts, and convictions, and not on account of thuggery and violent displays.

Ekiti: Your Miff Statements Reveal Olujimi's Political Relevance, Atofarati Carpets Fayose's Ally, Bisi Kolawole.
The crisis rocking the Ekiti State Chapter of People's Democratic Party (PDP), took a new twist on Monday as a faction believed to be loyal to former Governor Ayo Fayose and as contained in a statement signed and made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti by one Raphael Adeyanju, purportedly expelled an ally of the Senator representing South District of the state, Mrs Biodun Olujimi, Hon Badejo Anifowose from the party for alleged misconduct and anti-party activities.

However, in a reaction to the development, Chief Sanya Atofarati, media aide to Senator Olujimi, had described Kolawole and others as "bunch of clowns who are merely seeking undue attention."

In his words Atofarati said it was funny that Kolawole keeps impersonating Ekiti PDP Chairmanship position even when INEC had denied knowledge of his purported Congress in a report.

It will be recalled that a former Member of the State's Assembly, Hon Badejo Anifowose was recently appointed as Chairman, Ekiti State Environmental Agency by the Fayemi/APC led state government, in November. Anifowose was until his appointment a member of PDP and a staunch supporter of Senator Olujimi, an appointment which has since generated controversy between Olujimi and Fayose camps as allegation and counter allegations have continued to trail the party.

The Fayose group had earlier alleged Senator Olujimi of hobnobing with Gov Kayode Fayemi of APC, a relationship which many believed would have birthed the appointment of Hon Anifowose. However, this position had since been debunked by Olujimi's camp.

Atofarati said, "We are tired of responding to irrelevant comments from some politically irrelevant persons Marauding themselves as PDP executives in Ekiti State. "In the sight of law, the only known and recognized Congress ever held in Ekiti PDP in 2020 is that of March 7 Ward Congress, which is still awaiting ratification before the Appellate Court. How then can somebody claim to be a state Chairman when the foundational Congress is still being contested before the Courts.?
Contact Edo-mark Prints and Branding (0806 741 7888)

Therefore, whatever is the schinanigans being perpetuated by Fayose and his boys are mere jamboree which every right thinking individual should ignore in totality."

Atofarati said that the Fayose/Kolawole recent statements are laced with miff and has further revealed the political relevance of Senator Olujimi in Ekiti politics, he thereby advised the duo of Fayose and Kolawole to settle scores with Olujimi, if there is any, to enable the opposition Party move forward in the state. He added

"I stand to be quoted, without prejudice to the pending suit awaiting declaration before the Court of appeal in Ado Ekiti, even if the court decides to give judgement in favour of Fayose group, he (Fayose) obviously lack human management and for that, we are confident the Olujimi group will produce the next Governorship candidate in Ekiti 2022 primaries."

Atofarati therefore urged PDP members in the state to ignore Fayose and his numerous antics aimed at destabilizing the party in the state, saying; " if transparent election was to be conducted between Olujimi and Fayose, even within those aclaimed to be Fayose's executives/delegates or loyalists, Olujimi will still defeat Fayose because 70 percent of those aclaimed by Fayose are for Senator Olujimi."

Speaking further, Atofarati said, that; "despite their infamous 'Oath-taking', we have many of his aclaimed followers and executives who said they were only coerced, they are in talks with us and pledging their loyalty. The truth is that, Ekiti PDP is yet to have either local government or state congresses, going by the INEC reports; hence, you can not have a valid state Congress when the party is yet to conduct Local Government Congress. Therefore, whatever is said or done by Kolawole and his co-travellers are the handwriting of Fayose and must be ignored in totality."

ONDO 2020: Jegede’s case against Akeredolu begins at Tribunal tomorrow

THE legal fireworks over the result of the October 10 governorship election in Ondo State won by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu will begin tomorrow at the Governorships Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure, the state capital.

The candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Eyitayo Jegede had filed a petitioned against Akeredolu, who was declared winner of the October 10, 2020 Election by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, at the tribunal headed by Justice Umar Abubakar.

Justice Abubakar would lead two other judges to hear the petition filed by Jegede as from tomorrow, December 8.

Election Tribunals are established pursuant to section 285 of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution (as Amended) and section 133 of the Electoral Act 2011 (as Amended) to address disputes arising from Elections.

contact Edo-mark Prints and Branding (0806 741 7888)

Jegede through his lead counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN had dragged the All Progressives Congress, APC and Governor Akeredolu before the tribunal to answer for alleged infractions against the laws of the land.

One of the grounds of the petition is that Akeredolu was not validly nominated by his party APC. By the provisions of section 183 of the 1999 Constitution, a serving Governor of a State (in this case, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni) cannot serve as the National Chairman of APC at the same time to nominate Akeredolu as candidate of their party for the Ondo Elections. Section 183 states “The Governor shall not, during the period when he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever”.

Jegede is saying that “Akeredolu was not validly nominated and as such APC had no candidate for the Ondo Election.

He added that “Article 17 section iv of the APC Constitution also provides that, any official of the party cannot simultaneously occupy any other executive office in government.

” It states further that “No officer in any organ of the party shall hold executive position office in government concurrently”. Again Buni ran foul of this provision.

Jegede also posited that ” the Election was marred with violence in some Local Governments as well as over voting in other areas.

Kidnapped Chinese expatriate regains freedom in Ekiti, N100m ransom paid

A Chinese expatriate kidnapped in Ekiti State has regained freedom after four days in captivity.

The expatriate, one of the engineers handling the construction of the new Ado-Iyin road, was abducted on Friday evening at the site after the gunmen killed a policeman and shot a civilian.

A source close to the road construction company said the abductee was released around 11pm on Tuesday after payment of N100 million ransom.

The ransom was reportedly collected at a place in Kwara State while the Chinese engineer was released along Ilawe-Igede road in Ekiti State.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, ASP Sunday Abutu, said no ransom was paid as the release was possible after a serious manhunt by security operatives.

He therefore assured residents that the command would continue to do everything possible to ward off criminal elements and ensure maximum security of lives and property.

APC Chieftain, John Filani Renounces Membership

…Says big political parties, leaders have failed the country

Chief Olumuyiwa Filani, on Tuesday, announced his resignation as a member of the party in the state.

He expressed disappoinment in APC, saying he could not continue in a party where citizens were not given equal treatment, described big political parties and leaders in the country as ‘forest of failures’

He lamented the low per cent of youths involvement in governance, high unemployment rate and security challenges bedevilling the country.

Filani announced his renunciation in his country home, in Ward 4, Ikole Local Government Area of the State.

“I joined the political party, All Progressives Congress (APC) fully in the year 2010 with membership serial number ‘3’ which I have returned to the party chairman at ward 4, Ikole Local Government, Ekiti State, Nigeria in line with the party’s constitution.

” I became a member of the party with hopes of creating a political power that would serve the needs of the people of our great country Nigeria, envisioned a country where all people are treated equally regardless of colour, tribe, religion and be given chance of a good life.

“Unfortunately this is not the case and I can no longer standby and watch helplessly. It is very obvious and indeed unfortunate that all big name parties and our political elders’ generations have failed us and our noble country.

” I am now convinced that the.problems of Nigeria is above what the All Progressives Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) could solve, that is why I am now pitching my tent against APC”

“Our youths they say, are the future of tommorow, but in this nation the youths are not encouraged, unemployment is now the order of the day, insecurity has taken over and gradually our lives are becoming exactly the opposite of that which we expect .”

He urged it was important for people to speak out, saying otherwise could be disastrous.

“When the wise refuse to talk, the fools multiply, we’re tired of the status quo, it is essential that we speak out, when we can, before things eventually get out of hand.”

He said having considered the above, he unequivocally and with no iota of regrets renounced his membership of the All Progressives Congress(APC).

Filani was a former Commissioner of Fiscal Responsibility Commission between 2011 -2014 during Governor Fayemi’s first term and former Chairman of Western HOTELS LTD( A subsidiary of Oodua Group of Companies) between 2004 -2007.

#ZabarmariMassacre: 38 More Corpses Recovered On Monday, Army Stopped Us From Taking Photos — Eyewitness

About thirty-eight more corpses were on Monday recovered from the scene of Saturday’s onslaught on farmers by Boko Haram Insurgents in Borno State, according to a report on saharareporters.com.

The deceased were slaughtered at a rice plantation in Kwashabe village, about 20 kilometres north of Maiduguri. The insurgents were also said to have destroyed the rice plantation after killing the farmers.

The Defence Headquarters had claimed only 43 people were killed, but a source told SaharaReporters that the death toll had risen to 81 as 38 more bodies were recovered by search and rescue teams on Monday.

He said, “The army restricted us from capturing the scene with our phones; they know what they are doing, and they know they will be exposed. Today alone, 38 bodies were recovered and it will continue tomorrow.

“What happened here was a human harvest, not massacre, the story media and the government is just lying. They did not even talk about the farm produce and rice plantation that was razed ablaze by Boko Haram. Some bodies can never be recovered because flowing water went away with them.”

The killing of the rice farmers has attracted condemnations with some Nigerians calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the country’s Service Chiefs and overhaul the security architecture of Nigeria.
