Kidnappers shot the man I met in their den to show me they could kill
~ Alh. Akinbami, Ekiti oil magnate

A petroleum products dealer, Alhaji Suleman Akinbami, who was kidnapped by gunmen in Ekiti State and released in Kogi State a week after, speaks with ABIODUN NEJO about his ordeal in the kidnappers’ den

When you woke up that Sunday morning, what was your feeling about how the day would go?

I had been feeling like resting about three days earlier, so I spent the day indoors. At about 7pm, after observing prayer at my mosque along the Ikere Road, Ado Ekiti, I thought I needed to go my petrol station along Poly Road. So, I got there, observed my prayer, after which the station manager and I went to check the generator under repairs. On our return from the generator house, I saw some people moving towards us, I asked my manager who they were and whether he received visitors that late and he said he did not know them. I asked the strangers why they were there but they replied that they were looking for me. I asked them why they were looking for me, but the next thing was that they brought out guns. At that stage, I knew that there was trouble. They started threatening me; they demanded my car key, which I released to them. They ordered me into the car and they drove me off. I did not know where I was until the day I was released one week later. They picked me up on Sunday, they released me the following Sunday.

Earlier that day, did you have any premonition that you would have such an experience?

No; nothing like that. I did not have any quarrel with anybody. I did not have any dealing with anybody; I do not go into shady deals. My business is petroleum sales. Up till now, I still wonder why they chose me as their target.

On your way to the petrol station, did you notice anything unusual, such as a car or motorbike tailing your vehicle?

I did not notice anything. The incident happened around 8.17 pm.

What first came to your mind the moment the men brought out guns?

I knew I was in danger and that only God could save me.

When they drove out of your petrol station, which direction did the vehicle face?

My hands and legs were tied and I was made to lie on the floor of the car with an instruction not to look up. So, I would not know.

Did they speak to you during the drive?

They said that they were sent on the assignment by somebody. They said that I collected N60m from somebody; I was dazed, I asked ‘N60m? Who is that person? Did that person give it to me in cash or transferred it to my account? What business was he trying to do with me?’ I asked the questions in quick succession because I know N60m is a lot of money. I said there was nothing like that.

What were their responses to your questions?

They said I would know later. That was what they told me.

Where did they take you to that Sunday night?

They drove at a very high speed, into gallops and potholes. Along the line, the battery terminal of the vehicle disconnected and the car engine stopped. At that stage, they threatened to kill me, saying I had activated the car security system. They said, ‘We don’t think you have value for your life!’. I begged them to untie my hands so that we could check the car to know what the matter was. We checked it after my appeal, it was then I discovered that it was the battery terminal that lost contact. I reconnected the battery terminal. Then we moved on. They threatened me that they would waste my life should the vehicle stopped moving again. It was then that I told them that the fuel might finish any moment because there was only a small quantity of fuel in the vehicle’s tank, since I had no plan to embark on such a long-distance journey. After some time, the fuel got exhausted and the vehicle stopped. We were there in the bush at that point till around 6am on Monday when they went to buy fuel and took off again.

What was the location where you passed the night?

I don’t know the place because I didn’t know how we got there. It was in the bush. I could hear people observing vigil in a church; it was not far away from town. They looked for fuel that night but they could not get.

What was running through your mind when they could not get fuel that night?

I was just praying to God to please intervene and save me.

How did you feel being with strange, harmful people for a whole week?

It was like hell. I don’t pray for such an experience for my enemies. It was a harrowing, very bad, ugly experience. It was terrible. They tortured me. I was slapped, boxed, caned and kicked. It was a harrowing experience.

Did they feed you?

On the first day, Monday, they gave me pounded yam; they said they wanted to treat me like an honourable person, but I could not eat it because I don’t eat peppery food. When they asked what they could give me, I told them to get bread, which they got for me. After that, they started cooking and we ate the same food. They bought cooking utensils and they cooked in the bush there. At times, they would go to town to buy what they wanted. They allowed me to have a bath at a day interval.

Were you the only victim in the kidnappers’ den?

I met a man there; they shot at him. I do not know how he got there. They shot at him in my presence just for me to know that they could kill. Maybe he was one of them and they were just trying to work on my psyche, I would not know. In fact, I was confused. They shot at him and he fell down, following which they took me away from the place. I would not know whether he died or rose after they had taken me away because they told me they could not be harmed by gunshot. I was surprised when they shot him, asking myself, ‘How would somebody be so evil-minded and shoot a fellow human just like that?’

How many were the kidnappers?

I saw only four; though they said they were many.

As a devout Muslim, how did you feel not having the opportunity to pray?

They did not allow me to pray for the first four days; but they allowed me to pray on the fifth day and they said they would not allow me again, but I was praying. I did not miss my five times daily prayer. Silently and unknown to them, I was praying. Real Muslims have a way of praying without letting anybody know. I prayed when it was time to pray; I was just watching the movement of the sun to know when it was time for prayer.

From their discussions, what tribe are they?

They spoke good Yoruba and good English.

Meaning they are Yoruba.

I want to believe that if they are not Yoruba, they had been in Yorubaland for long. They spoke good Yoruba. They spoke good English as well. They claimed to be jobless graduates.

Putting everything together, do you suspect anybody?

Only God knows. I don’t know whether I should believe what they said or not, but they told me they were sent.

What is your impression of the kidnappers?

My kidnappers were angry people. They were very angry; I think they listened to radio and watched television. While I was there, they drove my car to town. In the town, they listened to radio and watched television, they listened to news, they said they saw me on national and international television news, and heard my name on radio. They asked – ‘Who are you? Why is your news everywhere? Are you the first person to be kidnapped? Why all this noise? Who are you by the way? What are you? What is your worth? Why are people shouting Akinbami, Akinbami?’ However, it is surprising that they drove my car around town for a week without removing the number plates and nobody challenged them. They went to town with my car, they came back, they did not remove the number plates and nobody challenged them. It is surprising.

Did they discuss ransom with you?

Yes, they did. They established contact with my family on the third day. They said it was the N60m, which they alleged that I collected from a certain person. I told them I did not collect any money from anybody. I told them that fortunately, I had just received my statement of account which they could check in the car to see if there was any N60m, even N20m or N10m inflow from anybody into my account. I told them to check and that I could not be keeping money at home.

How much ransom was paid for your release?

I will not disclose that one. They collected ransom.

How were you released?

I was released after the ransom was paid. Somebody from my family brought the ransom to them in the bush between Kuje in the Federal Capital Territory and Kogi State; they collected it and released me and as well handed over my car to me. It was after I was released and left the bush that I knew where I was. All the time they were taking me here and there, I did not know where I was. It was on leaving there that I started looking at signposts to see names of towns. I have forgotten the names of the villages in Kogi State close to Abuja. I do not want to remember the experience. I want it to go off my memory.

Many kidnap victims paid ransom and yet were killed, what will you attribute your survival to?

The prayers of every good Nigerian and all good human beings all over the world who prayed for me. When I returned, people told me how they were praying for me even in Saudi Arabia following contacts. Prayers from several universities, NASFAT in Ekiti here, the Grand Imam, traditional rulers, Muslims, Catholics on the order of the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti prayed for me; also. Christians fasted, prayed and had vigil because of me. I am surprised. It was when I returned that I heard about all these. I am surprised. I thank all of them for the love they showed me. I shed tears when I came back and heard all these. That they did all these for me – What am I? Who am I? I am nothing and they were sympathetic to my cause! They prayed that God should protect me, I thank all of them. I appreciate them. God will continue to protect them and every member of their families. I pray God to please repay their kindness.

What lessons did you learn from the experience?

One should always be with his God. Don’t do evil. Don’t cheat anybody, be sincere. Be truthful; be honest in everything you do. Be godly.

What advice do you have for government on how to end kidnapping in the country?

Kidnapping has now become a trend. It is my prayer that we quickly find a solution to it. In the bush over there, one day, the kidnappers were elated that one of their victims had paid the balance of his ransom. They told me that they kidnapped somebody who they collected N30m from. They said the victim initially paid N27m and paid the N3m balance that day. I am appealing to government; the economy is not helping matters; those in authority should try and see how they can help the unemployed graduates through employment creation. Let the youths have something doing. The truth is that without jobs, it will be easy to recruit them into kidnapping, and nobody will be safe. I appeal to the state government and the Federal Government to please find a solution because my case will not be the last. They have kidnapped others. Government should do something to at least create employment so that those who have no job now will have means of livelihood. Somebody who has no job can be easily convinced to join these groups of people.

Why Fayose didn’t attend Wike’s peace meeting with Makinde – Aide

A former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has explained why he shunned the Peoples Democratic Party South-West leaders’ meeting to reconcile him with Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

The meeting which was held at the Oyo State Government House, Ibadan had Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Ekiti State Governor, Mr Segun Oni, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, Makinde and others in attendance.

Fayose, his loyalists and some PDP leaders in Oyo State who are supporting Dr Eddy Olafeso’s bid to return as the National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (South-West) were absent at the meeting.

When contacted on Thursday, Mr Lere Olayinka, the media aide to Fayose said although the former governor wanted to attend the meeting, his loyalists said they would not sit on the same table with Makinde because of his utterances and actions.

Olayinka said, “Fayose did not attend the meeting. Those invited from the other side said they were not going to be part of the meeting. They said they did not want to go to the Government House or sit on the same table with Governor Makinde.

“The impression as at yesterday (Wednesday) was that the meeting would be shifted but I believe Governor Wike just came to attend it for formality sake.

“One thing is that nothing can be achieved without the other side at the meeting.”

Presidential Adviser, Femi Ojudu, narrates COVID-19 experience

Babafemi Ojudu: Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs

By Babafemi Ojudu

It took a lot of self persuasion to decide on a trip to Ado Ekiti on December 18 to attend the funeral of my friend’s dad. Kay as we call Kayode Afolabi has been my pal since primary school. I therefore considered it an obligation to join in the traditional obsequies for his dad. His parents are like mine.

It took a friend like Kay to take me out of my home to office routine since the outbreak of the pandemic almost a year ago.

I am finicky about my health. Sometimes my insistent on being healthy borders on hypochondria. I took Covid-19 seriously from the outbreak. I read up every literature I could lay my hand about the virus and other pandemics in history. In fact one of the books I read before I took ill was The Great Influenza by George M. Barry.

I took the test monthly. Each time I waited anxiously to be told via a text message from Dr Audiferen that simply read, “Distinguished, you are negative.”

On Wednesday January 23, the text message was different.

‘Distinguished where are you?’, the message read.

‘Home’ , I replied.

“Stay there and await further instructions. You have tested positive to COVID’.

It was like a sledgehammer struck my head. I felt numb. Further instructions later tumbled out of his mouth like a military instructor on a drill.

“Don’t come to work from now. Make sure you have no contact with anyone. Will send you your medications and keep me briefed of developments, “ he added.

My journey to COVID-hell started on January 18th. The day before, my driver and aide left for Ekiti so they can pick me up at the airport following day because I had a lot of work that needed urgent attention.

The next morning, I took a cab to the airport to catch an 11.00 am Overland Airline flight to Akure where my driver will pick me up and drive up to Ado Ekiti.

But the flight didn’t leave until 5.45pm, keeping me in the airport for over seven hours. It was the holiday period and a weekend with Nigerians flying in from all over the world into Abuja airport from where they boarded local flights to their respective destinations. The airport was jammed. A super- duper spreader it promised to be.

The day after, I left home with my nose mask securely strapped across my face and a bottle of sanitizer in my pocket. I went to the funeral to honor my friend. As a public official, I mingled – greeting people and sanitizing my hand right away. I was so busy socializing I didn’t even eat or drink.

Then, people started coming to take photographs and selfies with me. A public servant has no hiding place in Nigeria. You must oblige your constituents. I obliged the people by taking off my mask for some of the pictures.

I was at the party for less than sixty minutes. But I was never at ease. This was a party that didn’t feel right. I had come to honor my friend but I didn’t walk into a friendly air. A few days before, I was warned by a source , that some political opponents and foes were planning to harm me at the party. A relation called my wife from London to inform her of the intelligence she picked up from a close friend in Ekiti. As a compulsive political hornet nest stirrer I get these kinds of warning often. I don’t want rumors to imprison me. So, I often dismiss them but take security precautions. True to the information provided , by my informant , I witnessed a few strange things there. A story for another day.

I returned to Abuja on Monday after another long delay at the airport by the Overland Airlines flight.

Two days later, I started feeling uncomfortable. My body didn’t feel right. Dr Audiferren quickly arranged a test. Gbam! The jarring news came.

Between the airports, the flights and the party, the virus found its way into my body.

And so began my days and nights of nightmare.

My wife and children had left for Lagos for the Christmas holiday. I was to join them on 23rd. Now, I was home alone with COVID! Ade Ipaye offered a special facility at National Hospital, I declined. Wracking headache, insomnia , loneliness, restlessness, hallucinations, lack of appetite , sore mouth and throat, difficulty breathing, aches and pains in my joints became my lot as I ingested the prescribed drugs.

Late into the night on the third day of my diagnosis, I got a call out of the blues from Prof Adesuyi Leslie Ajayi, my cousin who is a USA-based professor of medicine.

“Hello, dear brother. It’s been a while. Hope you are fine. I managed to conclude my research on the Covid medication”, he announced. “Prof, I am not fine O”, I moaned. “ I am down with Covid.”

He inquired about the medications I was taking. I told him. I also read out a litany of the traditional ‘remedies’ such as ginger, Tumeric, lemon etc . ‘ Drop those’, he advised. Not long after he sent me a prescription.

The moment I received my positive diagnosis I handed over my debit card to my aide and hoped I would see him at the end of this nightmare. I sent him a text message to get me the prescribed medications. Two hours after taking the medications, I felt some relief.

‘Covid you are defeated”, I said to myself.

I decided to eat a slice of bread. After a bite, I was wracked by a bout of hiccup. I was shivering like I was in an earthquake. My breathing was labored. I could not sleep.
My doctors sent laboratory technologists to collect my samples. They reviewed my condition. Prof Ajayi sent prescriptions. Prof Ajayi insisted tests should be conducted on my liver, kidney and lungs. Audiferren and Ebuka examined the result of the samples and concluded there was no cause for alarm. There was the fear the virus could have damaged some vital organs or even penetrate into my brain. Their prescription for persistent hiccup tallied. It was a drug meant for a scary ailment. I was a bit jittery, but held on to hope. Because I couldn’t sleep nor read or rest, I took solace in social media. When you’re alone, isolated and in a battle with an unseen enemy, hope is your best medication.

I researched my symptoms, tried almost thirty home remedies for hiccup. The prescribed drug worked only for a few hours. Then came the heartburn, hot as hell fire. I said goodbye to food and beverages.

Prof Ajayi forwarded to me outcome of medical researches on hiccups as a new symptom of Covid. “The virus is mutating and new symptoms are emerging”, he said.

Prof Ajayi is a Nigerian we should all be proud of. He is the son of my great uncle, Chief Alex Olu Ajayi, the Odoba of Ado Ekiti. I grew up hearing tales of his academic prowess at the University of Ife. In May 2020, Prof Ajayi got in touch with me about his research on the efficacy of a particular medicine in the treatment of Covid. Ajayi said he is collaborating with some Medical researchers at home on mass testing in Nigeria.

“They will need funding, could you help get them funds within the system?”, he requested.

I will try”, I told him. I immediately reached out to the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. He was enthusiastic. I linked both parties. They exchanged communications and a budget was prepared . Several Zoom meetings later, the VP worked his phones and made contacts with everyone with access to funds. Letters were written and appeals made. Then silence. Nothing happened. In the usual way of our officialdom and private sector/corporate do gooders, they’d rather award contracts for isolation centers, buy rice and spaghetti and pay for adverts on CNN.

The researchers got frustrated, thanked the VP for his efforts, expressed their understanding for his limitations and moved on.They looked for alternative means of funding , did peer review and published their findings. It was the outcome of their effort that saved my life.

A big thank you to Profs Ajayi , Femi Babalola and their team. My appreciation to Drs Audiferen, Adelowo and Ebuka and their colleagues in the State House Clinic.

Prof Barbara Iyen- Omafoman another friend and Professor of Medicine based in UK was fantastic. She monitored my condition all through, sometime prescribing sleeping mode which is known in medical circles as ‘ prone positioning in adult critical care’. With this she said, the danger of death from lack of oxygen while sleeping is reduced. Family, true friends , at home and abroad kept vigil with me and made suggestions . My wife and children panic gripped returned from Lagos and took abode in an Abuja hotel, monitoring me via phone .

The few colleagues who got the hint were fantastic. Hajia Maryam Uwais, herself a survivor, sent crystals for steaming and exotic teas ‘to awaken your senses’.

Lara Owoeye Wise, my colleague in The News one night sent a message to inform me of her Covid condition and frustrations with the symptoms. She didn’t know we were both in the same storm. She got well before me and has been very supportive.

Many others got in touch. My anguish unknown to them. They could not buy Covid medications or pay for test . I kept sending messages to Ahmed Lawal to transfer from the little I had in my account.

My appreciation to my aides Ahmed and Clement Adewuya for their loyalty and care. Same goes for my younger friends Foluso Ojo, Olatunji David, Mike Oluwagbemi , my Los Angeles , Hollywood film maker friend Ose Oyamedan.

My fellow guerrilla journalist Kunle Ajibade kept reassuring me. My most valued auntie Mrs Dupe Oladimeji and husband were very supportive. Thank you Kabiyesi, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti. Your messages and prayers were tonic . And to Chief Sola Olarewaju and my numerous young supporters and friends who were worried stiff when they called and my voice was stunted and barely audible I am eternally grateful. Ade Ipaye , the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President remain a wonderful brother. You kept my mood lightened with your infectious humor. E se pupo.

COVID got me but God and science brought me back. My friends and family made sure I may be isolated but I wasn’t alone. The doctors performed miracles.

Twice within three years I knocked at the gate of death. In 2009 it was helicopter crash I survived from. These are pointers that I still have more years in Mother Earth and appreciation to my creator. I am therefore rededicating myself to serving humanity.

I was lucky, many others were not, as I was daily confronted with stories of the dead both known and unknown to me. My prayer for our people who still believe Covid does not exist is, may you never be admitted into COVIDOM.

If you don’t even care about your life, care about your neighbor’s and family.
Stay away from large gatherings. Postpone that wedding or funeral. What, for God’s sake , is the value of all these parties we waste time and money on? What point are we trying to prove?

The great John Jerry Rawlings of Ghana died two weeks after the funeral party of his mum. A Nigerian army general died too shortly after his mother’s funeral. Several colleagues got infected who attended a conference with him shortly before his death. Such ceremonies are super spreaders. These were men whose talents and genius are still needed here.

I have just read about an accomplished Texas based surgeon who visited home for Christmas , hosted a party and returned to base to die. Brides, grooms and relatives have died shortly after parties. I learnt of four professors who attended a wedding in Lagos. Two are dead and the others are still in intensive care.

Be reasonable, don’t endanger your life and that of others. Wear your mask, wash your hands, keep a reasonable distance, stay alive and healthy, submit yourself for vaccine when available.

The road ahead is rough, let’s have truly happy new year by taking the utmost care. COVID IS REAL.

Ex-APC Chairman speaks on cold war between Tinubu, Fayemi over 2023 presidential race

He said: “The two protagonists (Tinubu and Fayemi) are yet to speak up but their supporters have been in the vanguard of ambition yet to be declared. We should concentrate on building our party rather

The immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Chief Jide Awe, has said the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Governor Kayode Fayemi, enjoy a good relationship despite their rumoured interest in the 2023 presidential race.

Awe who advocated for unity in the APC urged the followers of the two chieftains to promote the overall interests of the party and make it stronger ahead of future elections.

The former Ekiti APC boss said now is the time to concentrate on building the party rather than causing division to make it a stronger election-winning platform.

Awe, who spoke on Saturday while featuring on a personality interview programme, THE CONVERSATION, on New Cruse 92.7 FM, Ikere, insisted that the APC must use the opportunity of being in power at the centre to restructure the country.

The Erijiyan Ekiti-born politician said politicians across party divides are being carried away by the race for the 2023 presidency when officeholders are yet to reach the midterm because much power has been concentrated at the centre.

The party chieftain called for the implementation of the Nasir el Rufai-led APC Panel on restructuring report to douse agitations for the reworking of the structures being operated in the country’s presidential system of government.

He canvassed for a return to regionalism as a basis for the development of the country which he said would not disturb the operations of the presidential system of government.

Responding to a question on the rumoured interest of Tinubu and Fayemi in the APC presidential ticket, ahead of the 2023 general elections, Awe noted that while the two prominent party leaders have not declared their ambition, their supporters have been shouting on their perceived bid from the rooftop.

He noted that while the supporters of Tinubu and Fayemi have been firing salvos at one another, the two leaders still maintain their friendship and relate well with each other.

He said: “The two protagonists (Tinubu and Fayemi) are yet to speak up but their supporters have been in the vanguard of ambition yet to be declared. We should concentrate on building our party rather than causing division.

“There is no pseudo war between Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Dr. John Kayode Fayemi. Look at you, the next day, you will see Dr. Fayemi at Bourdillon (Ikoyi residence of Tinubu).

“That is politics for you, it is a game of the more you look, the less you see.”

While advocating for stronger institutions, Awe said restructuring would help build stronger institutions that would further entrench democracy.

“We should have strong institutions backed up by law and we need strong institutions to back up the Presidency.

“Much importance has been attached to the Presidency. We have been revolving, let us dismantle this evil; make the Presidency less attractive and let’s lay a foundation.

“But I doubt if the present National Assembly can do it. The path to the greatness of Nigeria lies in going back to regionalism. I am an advocate of restructuring, let’s go back to the basics and rebuild our country,” he said.

Edo2020: Obaseki Wins As Court Dismisses APC’s Certificate Forgery Suit

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed the alleged certificate forgery suit filed against the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki.

The APC and Edobor had filed the suit alleging that Governor Obaseki presented a forged certificate to seek re-election in the Edo State governorship election held on September 19, 2020.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed delivered the judgment on Saturday in a suit filed by the All Progressives Party (APC) and a chieftain of the party, Williams Edobor, According to the plaintiffs, the said document was purportedly issued by the University of Ibadan, while the governor presented same to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which conducted the poll.

Before Justice Mohammed delivered the judgement in the suit, counsels to both parties in the matter had closed their cases after they presented witnesses and evidence to the court.

During proceedings on Thursday, lawyer to the Plaintiffs, Akin Olujimi, adopted his final written address.

He urged the court to affirm their position that the governor presented a forged certificate to the electoral umpire and was unfit to occupy the office.

This was, however, rejected by Governor Obaseki’s counsel, Ken Mozia, who asked the court to dismiss the suit over what he described as the plaintiff’s failure to prove their case.against the governor
