How Aregbesola Allegedly Received 96-month Salary Arrears in Secret

Facts have emerged on how a former governor of Osun State and the incumbent Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, was secretly paid 96 months salary arrears towards the end of his administration in 2018.

DAILY POST recalls that the former governor had boasted publicly on many occasions on how he sacrificed his salaries throughout the eight years of his 2-term tenure in office as a result of his personal conviction on inclusive governance.

However, DAILY POST authoritatively gathered that the former Osun State governor, towards the expiration of his administration in 2018 ordered the Ministry of Finance, through the Accountant General Office to effect the payment of his salaries for the whole eight years in office, amounting to several millions of Naira, which was paid to his personal account. DAILY POST cannot confirm the actual amount.

It would be recalled that Aregbesola, at different occasions had also claimed not to operate any personal account throughout his tenure in office.

But a very reliable source at the Ministry of Finance, who craved anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue said there is a verifiable evidence to substantiate that the former Osun State helmsman received all accruing salaries meant for his office in bulk.

According to him, the former governor was paid 96 months salaries around October 2018.

“Although, I cannot specifically state the exact amount the 96 months salaries amounted to, what I can say is that it runs into several millions of naira, and the former governor was paid towards the end of his second term tenure in office, sometime around October, 2018,” the source said.

Also, a senior official at the Accountant General office in the state confirmed the development, adding that the payment was shrouded in secrecy.

Meanwhile, a socio-political group in the State, Osun for Accountability, has berated Aregbesola for what it termed lack of transparency and probity on the part of the former governor, as it called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the Minister.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the State Coordinator, Comrade Adediwura Ominrin, said the action of the former governor was unbecoming of a personality he claimed to be during his 8-year tenure as a governor, describing him as a “political obscurantist”.

Omirin insisted that the action of the former governor negated the tenets of progressive philosophy and the scope of good governance.

“It is now glaring that the former governor, Rauf Aregbesola, was so deceptive throughout his tenure in office. He ran a government of deception and double standard.

“It is criminal for a public officer older of this stature and status to say something in the open and went ahead to do another thing, especially when it has to do with finance. How could you have mopped up a whole sum of 96 months salaries while claiming not to collect a dime throughout your tenure,’’ he said.

But reacting, the Minister’s media adviser, Sola Fasure, while speaking with DAILY POST insisted that the ex-governor while in office did not collect any salary.

He said, “Best to my knowledge, Aregbesola did not collect any salary and he gave the reason for that. Aregbesola said the state provided house, security, vehicle and everything he needed.”

Ibadan

Another dimension has on Tuesday emerged to the choice of who becomes the South West Chairman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The development was revealed following Governor Seyi Makinde and some other party stakeholders adoption of Ambassador Taofik Arapaja during the PDP Zonal caucus meeting held at the Government House ,Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

The meeting which had in attendance Senator Abiodun Olujimi representing Ekiti South in the National Assembly, all PDP lawmakers at the National Assembly from Oyo State, the candidate of PDP in Ondo State in the 2020 governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede; Senator Olu Alabi, the caretaker Committee Zonal Chairman, Dayo Ogungbenro; former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Segun Oni, former Deputy Governors kofoworola Akerele-Bucknor(Lagos), Olusola Eleka (Ekiti), Olusola Obada (Osun) and others.

Governor Makinde while speaking on the latest development said the decision to nominate Arapaja was made after consultations with party leaders in the state.

Makinde said:”I want to beg that for each of our state, let there be inclusiveness. Let all tendencies in our states come together and agree on the person that we will put into each of these positions so that when we get here on March 6,2021,we will just do funfair and there would not be disagreement or crisis. We will come just to validate what each state has done. That will be my expectation and that will be my message to everyone.”

He said, “To lead that charge, in Oyo State, many have come to meet and asked me who is our candidate for the chairmanship position zoned to our state. I asked them to consult all our leaders. The feedback they gave was that if we want Southwest to play a critical role, we need depth and experience, because the Zonal Chairman is a member of the National Working Committee. We need someone who is honest and truthful. They went round the state and the name they brought to me is that of Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja.”

“I told them that we would unveil him at this meeting and he will go to all the states and tell you all their vision and what they would do ensure that Southwest play a major and critical role on how to redeem this country”.

The governor said the party would redeem the country in 2023, saying the journey would begin in Southwest, noted that we are on the verge of history. Our coming together to put in the executives that will lead our party in Southwest zone is history in making. There cannot be redemption for our country without the participation of Southwest. Our party will provide the right leadership for the country”, Makinde said.

Speaking , Dayo Ogungbenro, said the meeting was important in view of the coming congress, adding that the party constitution has a laid down rules which must be followed.

Also, speaking a member of Board of Trustees (BOT), Senator Olu Alabi who was the governorship candidate of PDP in Osun State in 1998 election, said:”PDP is governed by certain mantra which are constitution and conventions. It is important that we follow the convention of the party as we follow the laws.

“Anyone made the leader must be able to tolerate anything. In Southwest now, we have one governor in our party. Automatically, he is the leader of the party in the zone. As the leader of the party, it is a lot of responsibilities. The leader must reach out more than what is doing now. You have to concede a lot of things. That concession must extend to your base and zone. We must institute and strengthen Elders Committee that will be in form of BOT.”

It is necessary for us to build a very strong party base. Our party is not as strong as it should be”.

Senator Olujimi said the time had come for the party to use its members in the National Assembly to become formidable.

Former Governor Oyinlola emphasized that the party must unite to achieve its objectives.

Arapaja said the future is bright for the party.

The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin urged party members to eschew pride and embrace humility in order to resolve issues in the party.

Bawa Appointment Was a Rude Shock, Magu Lament.

Former acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has reacted to the appointment of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the new Chairman of the commission.

Tosin Ajaomo, the lawyer to Magu, said the appointment made by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday came as a shock.

Buhari had yesterday asked the Senate to confirm Bawa as substantive EFCC Chairman.

But Ajaomo told Channels Television that justice has not been served in the allegations of corruption levelled against his client, Magu.

“Sincerely, I need to tell you that this appointment came to me as a shock. There is still an unfinished assignment that was pending,” he said.

“I was expecting that the issue of Magu would have been sorted out before moving to another stage.

“Unfortunately, we just got this news today that a new Chairman has been nominated by the President and his name has been forwarded to the Senate.”

Following a series of corruption allegations against the former EFCC boss, Magu was on July 10, 2020 suspended from office by President Buhari.

Mohammed Umar, the EFCC Director of Operations had earlier taken charge of the activities of the agency.

Venomous angry bees chase Fulani gang leader, Wakili in Ibarapa

Angry bees chase away Iskilu Wakili, a notorious Fulani gang leader, terrorising Ayete community in Ibarapa.

A report coming to us showed that the gods of Ibarapa have shown their vengeance by sending venomous ”no nonsense” bees after Iskilu Wakili and his armed men who have been reportedly wrecking mayhem like kidnappings, killings, farm destruction, among others, in the villages of Ayete community.

Yesterday, at a group meeting between Wakili and his armed men, in his domain (Gaa), angry bees, in their thousands, broke out of nowhere and stung life out of the gangsters. Wakili reportedly fainted in the process, and his armed men scattered all over with bees violently pounding on them repeatedly all over the places they ran to.

It would be recalled that after Sunday Igboho’s eviction of Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, Baale Odomofin who happened to be the royal father of the territory violently acquired by Wakili, had issued a quit notice for Wakili to leave his domain because of many atrocities he (Wakili) had been committing for almost 18 years he had spent on their land without permission from the land owners. But in rejection, Wakili and his armed men had shot at those chiefs sent to him by the Baale.

To repel eviction, Wakili had reportedly invited his more deadly kinsmen to join him and wreck more havocs on surrounding villagers and their farms. Some reports even said Wakili placed armed men as snippers on nearby trees leading to his settlement, these armed men would repel any force coming towards them..

Unfortunately for Wakili and his armed men, their weapons couldn’t save them from venomous angry bees. According to report from some villagers, ”angry bees stung them till some of them fainted and others ran away.”

Over 60 Senators Endorse Anti-open Grazing Bill Ahead of Plenary

SENATORS from the southern and middle belt areas of Nigeria have started mobilising their colleagues from the core north to support the anti-open grazing bill being sponsored by a Senator from the South-West geopolitical zone.

Investigation by our correspondent reveals that a principal officer of the upper chamber is coordinating support for the bill.

A Senator, who spoke with our correspondent on conditions of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the issue, confirmed that the bill already had over 60 signatures of lawmakers that had agreed to be co-sponsors.

He said, “If there is a total ban on open grazing, foreigners will not enter Nigeria with cows and start moving freely to every part of the country, wreaking havoc in the process.”

The Senate had on Wednesday last week passed a resolution, urging the state governments to implement the National Livestock Transformation Plan.

I’ve assured sponsor of my support – Moro

Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Benue South, who is a former minister of Interior, Abba Moro, confirmed to our correspondent in an interview that one of his colleagues, the sponsor of the anti-open grazing bill, had sought his support.

Moro said, “I can tell you on good authority that one of my colleagues is sponsoring a bill on anti-grazing. I have assured him that I will support him and I will lend my voice to his bill.”

Similarly, the Senator representing Osun East, Francis Fadahunsi, confirmed in an interview with our correspondent on Friday that the bill was already in the Senate.

He said, “The anti-grazing bill is already in the Senate and I am fully in support of it. The foreign herdsmen are in Nigeria to cause mayhem; so, the only alternative is to stop their free movement through the proposed law.”

The Senator representing Cross River South, Gershon Bassey, also confirmed that the bill would soon be introduced to the Senate.

He said, “The bill is already in the Senate but we have a process. Just because a bill comes in doesn’t mean it will be passed the same way it is presented. Three has to be a widespread consultation before we can reach something that is agreeable to everybody.

“We need peace and we need to find a peaceful solution to move the country forward. A lot of people have suggested ranching but we need to find a way forward that is acceptable.”

Lending his support to the bill, the Senator representing Ogun West, Tolu Odebiyi, said ban on open grazing would prevent incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

Senate spokesperson’s reaction

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Senate, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, said, “I am not aware of any anti-grazing bill in the Senate. The Rules and Business Committee will have to list it on the order paper before it will be known to the Senate.

It is only when it comes to the floor that I will know. As of today (Friday), I have not seen any anti-grazing bill in the Senate.”

Meanwhile, the Senator representing Lagos West, Solomon Adeola, said on Sunday that he would not hesitate to support the Yewa people’s agitation for self-defence if the Federal and Ogun State governments failed to protect them from constant Fulani herders’ attacks.

Adeola, who is the Chairman Senate Committee on Finance and a prominent indigene of Yewaland condemned the invasion, destruction and killings of his people by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

He said, “I will not hesitate to join my people in the defence of their rights to life, property and peaceful coexistence with others at the back of seeming failure of duly constituted authorities to defend such fundamental rights against anyone or forces.”

Also, the Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Tolu Odebiyi, has once again, urged the President, Major General Muhammadu, (retd.), to speak up over the rising killings of innocent Nigerians by armed herdsmen.

Odebiyi stated this on Sunday when he visited communities in Ogun West Senatorial District which were currently being attacked by the rampaging herdsmen.

He lamented that several calls to the President to address the carnage, kidnappings, rape and maiming caused by the rampaging herdsmen had yielded no positive response.

He said, “It is wrong to keep quiet when herdsmen who bore arms and AK-47 are spontaneously killing our people.”

The Ogun West Senator, according to a statement by his media office, also visited the 10 persons who were critically injured at the hospital due to the horrific attack perpetrated by the herdsmen.
