Ekiti Governorship: Seat Not Exclusive To Men ~~Sen Olujimi |Ojaomonews

Senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, Mrs Biodun Olujimi, has said it would be wrong and amount to abridgement of fundamental rights, for the governorship position to be an exclusive preserve of men in the country.

The former minority leader, also cautioned those flaunting the card of gender as a criterion for the 2022 governorship election in the state, saying such individuals should “stop insulting women, focus on capacity and competence to deliver democratic dividends to the people of the state”.

Olujimi stated this, on Saturday, while declaring her intention to contest the 2022 governorship election on the Platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at her ward 7, Omuo Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti East Local Government Area of the state.

She said: “There was nothing spectacular about being a governor such that it should be exclusive for men. I feel insulted and offended, when some people insinuate that it was not time for women to be governor of a state.”

Olujimi, who said she doesn’t believe that politics is a man’s world, argued that those having this erroneous impression were only barbaric and provincial in thinking and exposure.

“What about politics at the level of the Senate, will you not say it is man’s world? What is on ground is not about men or women; it is about development; it is about inclusiveness; it is about wanting to serve your people.

“That is why I believe that coming into it is nothing spectacular especially, because I have been there before. This won’t be my first time.

Nowadays, I hear stories that it isn’t time for women. I feel pained and insulted, because it was not time for women when I became the commissioner for work.
“It was not time for women, when I became the Deputy Governor. It wasn’t time for women, when I was elected into the House of Representatives. It was not time for women, when I went to the senate and became Deputy Minority Whip and also got re-elected into the Senate.

“So, it is because we have elevated the governorship election beyond its scope that the issue of gender is played up. So, I feel offended and annoyed with such insinuations. It is about capability, competence and requisite knowledge.
“For once, no woman has been there except for Anambra, when a woman inadvertently became an acting governor.

So, what is wrong in ensuring that there is inclusiveness? I believe I have what it takes to be a governor of a state,” she said, adding that for equity and justice sake, all political parties fielding candidates for the election should pick from the southern zone, which has never produced the governor since the return of democracy in 1999.

“I have never stop saying that the south has been badly marginalised. I have never stop saying it. I have been behind the agitation for power shift to the south. The reason is that if you are a true born of the south and you see the marginalisation going on, you either speak up or forever remain silent.

“There are three senatorial zones. In the north, Segun Oni had three and half years. Governor Kayode Fayemi is about completing 8 years. If you add the two, they would have spent eleven and half years. If you come to the central, Adeniyi Adebayo was there for 4 years follow by Ayodele Fayose, who spent roughly eight years, making it a total of 12 years. The south hasn’t done.

“If you don’t allow the south now, it means they will wait for another eight years before taking a shot at it and the state would have existed democratically for 32 years without a southern governor,” she maintained.

She, however, said the ruling All Progressives congress (APC), could be defeated by the PDP, if the party did not put a wrong foot forward by electing wrong candidate as the standard bearer.

Senator 'biodun Olujimi bags African Leading Women Award 2021 – Photos

Senator Abiodun Olujimi, representing Ekiti south senatorial zone, on Thursday bagged the African Leading Women Award in 2021.

The award was bestowed on 100 distinguished women on the African continent in 2021.

Presenting the award to the lawmaker, President of African Leading Women Organization, Ambassador Chris Odey, said Olujimi’s choice followed her track record at the National Assembly.

Odey said “we are here because we feel she is a woman that has done well in the National Assembly. She was once a deputy Governor and a ranking Senator for that matter”.

Specifically, the organizers of the award said “she has been the voice of the women and youths”.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the award, Senator Olujimi said it was honourable to be counted among 100 women in Africa for 2021, “that is a great honour. To imagine that I didn’t expect it, but, you thought me fit to be one of them, I am extremely grateful”.

The former deputy Governor of Ekiti state said  “for me, this is an encouragement, and it means more work, what we have done is still insufficient and that we should continue and do a lot more”.

“It is also good to note that what we are doing is for the benefit of Nigerians, it is for the good of our constituents and to make Nigeria better. When you are involved in the Parliament, you are asked to come and make laws for good government and for the ease of life of our constituents and that is what we do.

“once in a while we also try to ensure that we reach out to the less privilege in the society and also to attract empowerment and Programmes into our constituencies and make life a bit better for them”.

Olujimi, who is also a governorship aspirant in the 2022 gubernatorial election in Ekiti state expressed optimism that for once Nigerians will speak with one voice and say we want to make a difference, we want to give 50 percent of the population a voice.

“I assure you when we win we will make a big difference”.

On women and youths in Ekiti state, she added, “for me, am not going to segregate, we are all equal in the eyes of God, explaining that the most under privileged are women and youths and the People with Disabilities, “but the first thing would be how to make life comfortable for everybody. And am saying we are going to make a great difference” Olujimi said.

Ekiti Born International Lawyer Spite Gov. Fayemi On Dilapidated Roads| Ojaomonews

It's on note that Ekiti people had been making complaints about the conditions of their communities and linking roads recently. The state government led by Dr John Kayode Fayemi had never replied to any of the complaints or identified with the people in the process of their hardships through inaccessibility of the major roads of the state and the roads that links the state with the neighboring states.

Ojaomonews  obtained that, An Oye-Ekiti Born International Lawyer, Yemi Ayodele Ayeni popularly known as "YAA" had taken to social media to express his unsatisfactory and displeasure over the negligence of Ekiti people and the bad representation of APC government under Dr Kayode Fayemi.

The message read in part:

I seldom talk about governance of APC in order not to be erroneously judged on sentiment but it is becoming unbecoming in Ekiti. I learnt most of our roads are not better than this photo.

Gov Fayemi wants us to believe APC is the best and people cant commute from one village to another. The State of the chairman of Governors Forum and the closest ally of Mr President.

Ekiti people, they are coming back in the next 7 months. If you like, dont shine your eyes.
Photo: Ido - Aramoko road.

The worst of the scenario is that the government is silent on whether there's communication with the federal government and any other related agencies or either the government is ready to do something tangible in paying attention to the plight of the people of Ekiti.

PDP Chieftain, Adebakin Seeks More Space For Youths, Women In Leadership Position

A Chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon Taiwo Hellen Adebakin has tasked the youths and women to show more commitment towards attaining leadership positions in the country.

Adebakin, a member of the PDP National Executive committee (NEC) charged them to come out of their shells and take up leadership tasks.

She decried the low level of participation of youths and women in the leadership contest across all strata of political positions.

The PDP stalwart urged the new leadership of the party to ensure that more spaces are given to women and youths in the various elective positions ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Ojaomonews gathered that Hon. Helen Adebakin expressed sadness that the lineup of the current National leadership of the PDP was not gender-sensitive.

Adebakin said ” while I am appealing to the new national leadership of our great party to give youths and women more space in leadership positions. I want to encourage them(youths/ women ) to come out of their comfort zones and take up the challenge. Leadership is not serving freely the women and youths must demonstrate the genuine capacity to lead.

” Yes, I am happy that the PDP had a rancour-free national delegate convention but I am not too happy about the gender imbalance. When you look at the lineup of the new National executives elect, you will discover that the number of women is nothing to write home about.

” It is an undeniable fact that the women and youths formed the larger percentage of the voting population in Nigeria. They must not however reduce to spectators where they are supposed to be major stakeholders “Adebakin argued.

“The image is not good for our party and I hope, this gender imbalance would be corrected as we prepare for the general elections. There must be inclusiveness ” she added.

Eleka to FG: Apply science-based technology to address poverty, corruption, energy, other human needs in Nigeria-Ojaomonews

Former deputy governor of Ekiti State, Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka, on Friday, called on the Federal Government to apply science-based technology to address critical problems of poverty, corruption, energy needs and other human problems in the nation.

This was as he noted that the differential in the application of science and technology to solving human problems, and to developing new processes and products has been identified to be the cause of continual widening gap between the rich and the poor countries.

Eleka, who gave this admonition while delivering a paper at the first annual lecture of School of Physical Sciences and 40th Anniversary of Federal University of Technology, Akure, noted that Science-based technology comes in as one of the leading factors of production in the emerging global economy in addition to other factors such as knowledge, creativity and innovation.

He said: “Every nation desires to be at peace and compete effectively in the emerging global marketplace. This can only be achieved if such a nation sets out to prioritize the adequate strengthening of its existing research and development centres and technology development institutions with the aim of encouraging and supporting the shift towards adoption and increased use of modern technological approaches.”

In his paper themed: ‘Energy and industrial development: panacea to poverty and insecurity challenges’, He emphasised that no nation can grow beyond its scientific and technological advancements, saying that Nigeria is not an exemption.

“Science and technology play a vital role in skill acquisition, job and wealth creation, improvement in the quality of life and industrial development of any nation.

“They not only bring in advances that lead to healthier, longer, wealthier and more productive lives, they are key ingredients to solving challenges of poverty alleviation and economic development challenges that we currently face and are likely to face in the future,” Eleka added.

He bemoaned the mental perception of Nigerian leaders on science and technology which, according to him, “they see it as consumable items and not something that should be created.”

“Nigeria as a nation has brilliant people that are performing feats all over the world except in Nigeria. Why? This is because our government and the leaders fail to provide for them the necessary modern technological tools and equipment needed for excellent performance in our research centres and institutions.

“It is well-known fact that lack of appropriate and modern equipment limits breakthrough in research performance. The system is therefore caught up with the left-behind syndrome. The economy subsequently begins and continues to decline. This is the unfortunate story in Nigeria; hence the increasing spate of poverty and incidences of crime which are symptoms of deprivation and the lack of user engagement of young people in most cases,” Eleka explained.

Speaking on energy, he said its development over the years is attributed to advances in science and technology, adding that it is a key source of economic growth as many production and consumption activities involve energy as basic input.

Eleka, however, urged Nigerian leaders to harness the abundant renewable energy sources, which the country is endowed with to meet its present and future needs, adding that energy is one of the most important inputs for economic development, poverty eradication and security of any nation.

He concluded that the government at all levels should invest heavily in science and technology, encourage cutting-edge research in this sector and holistically implement the products of the Research and Development effort.
